After the United States gained independence, Congress recommended one yearly day of thanksgiving for the country. Later, George Washington suggested the date November 26 as Thanksgiving Day. Then, after the Civil war, Abraham Lincoln suggested on the fourth Thursday of November to be the day of thanksgiving.

Almost in every culture in the world there is a celebration of thanks for rich harvest every year. They are: Moon Festival in China in Mid-Autumn, Chuseok in Korea on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, Dongmaeng in Japan, Dozynki in Germany on first Sunday in October, Harvest festival in United Kingdom, Tigh Molaige in Irish in August, Thanksgiving Day in Canada on the second Monday of October.
